Notably, higher education R&D expenditures have grown at a compound annual rate of 5% over the past decade, reflecting the increasing importance of academic research in driving innovation. Salaries, wages, and benefits for R&D personnel accounted for the largest share of direct costs, totaling $47.1 billion.
